Summary: With mobile data traffic expected to increase dramatically in the foreseeable future, small-cell base stations are set to play an important role in expanding the targeted capacity of wireless networks. Mobile operators are realizing that to meet the increasing demands for data, video, connected devices, and application access from smart phones and other wireless devices, there is a real beauty to going small. The new 5G-New Radio standard brings multi-frequency, multi-technology aspects to small cells, thus enhancing their functionality.
Small cells provide flexibility and significant data performance improvements at an attractive cost. This is especially important with the evolution to Quality-of-Service-based applications such as VoLTE, Internet-of-Things explosion, and growing legacy user demand. Implementing a small cell infrastructure is also more environmentally friendly as it locates a cleaner signal using less overall power to the end user.
In this half day course, you will learn why small cells are needed and if they are the right solution for your network. A detailed description behind deployment challenges including topics such as radio interference, new frequencies used, property rights, power requirements and options, backhaul concerns, spectral efficiency guarantees, scalability impacts and RF propagation control will be addressed. Bio: Jonathan Levine currently holds the position of Director of Engineering for Mobilitie LLC based out of Chicago, IL. In his current role he is responsible for leading engineering design and driving the technical deployment process for wireless network evolution. His particular focus is on high-density 4G/5G network deployment and next-generation form-factor innovation. Prior to his current role, he spent over 10 years with U.S. Cellular. His latest role there was Member of Technical Staff for U.S. Cellular’s Technology Development Group where he was responsible for the evolutionary architecture and functionality of the Radio Access Network (RAN). The RAN consists LTE, EVDO, GSM, and CDMA technologies based on both the 3GPP and 3GPP2 standards groups. Before that, he served in the USAF as a member of the 264th Combat Communications Squadron from 1999-2005. His commercial wireless engineering career began in 2005 after completion of his BSEE from Northern Illinois University. Jonathan also holds a MSEE from the Illinois Institute of Technology (2008) and is an IEEE WCP.
