In today’s technical and digital revolutions, ocean industries are more than ever affected by the data
transformation paradigm shift. A paradigm shift can be defined as a fundamental change in the basic
concepts and experimental practices of scientific and practical disciplines. The data transformation
paradigm shift occurring today, is associated with moving from a collection of relatively large volumes of
data that, in the past, have rarely been used in day to day operations, to the present day case of
contemporary big data analytics that aim not only to merge historical data with even larger volumes and
varieties of near real-time data, but also to analyze all these data sets to uncover patterns and
connections that might otherwise be invisible.
Data analytics resides on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its subclasses Machine Learning (ML) and Deep
Learning (DL). These methods have been significantly improved since their inceptions during the 50’s
and over the last five years have become indispensable for processing and extracting information rapidly
from large data sets.
The presentation will address the trend in data transformation based on contemporary digital
technologies and analytics that affects oil and gas industry, as well as other associated ocean industries.
The presentation will also cover how to extract, explore and analyze large data sets efficiently to infer
valuable information and deeper knowledge of our oceans.
