Summary: High-speed chargers for electric vehicles (EVs) are growing in public locations. They are the fastest growing segment of chargers. With the release of more than 20 new EVs at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2017, the demand for public charging is going to grow. EVs finally cover most of the vehicle segments from motorcycles to semi-trucks. In many cases a single high-speed charger can exceed the installed electric service in a small parking garage or highway rest area.

Bios: Doug Houseman has been working in the industry for more than 40 years. He started working on Demand Response and DER issues in the 1980s. He is a senior member of PES, a NIST Fellow and the lead author of the Distribution Utility Technology Roadmap. He has worked with major utilities globally over the last 20 years.
As a consultant with the EnerNex Smart Grid Engineering team, Sean Morash produces solutions through research based on a working knowledge of Smart Grid related applications, including communication technologies and protocols, advanced sensing and control, renewable energy, electrical, mechanical and information systems integration, enterprise information architecture, cyber security, information modeling, and related disciplines and methodologies. He specializes in the simplification of complex modern grid themes and systems.

Summary: A well-known story is predicting performance of Boston Red Sox players enabling them to win 3 World Series since 2004. The movie, β€œMoneyball” also touched on PA. We focus on team ratings/rankings and predicting winners. We explore creating ratings from pair-wise comparisons and sort them to get rankings and discuss underlying mathematics. Pythagorean theorem and the Log 5 formula are used to compute wins. We use the Elo Rating System to rank players and teams. Finally, β€œaggregation of ranking” is done as an input to our prediction model. We use the Borda method for rank aggregation. We explore various PA models for sport. Regression models with several predictor variables estimate win probability. Start with polynomial regression and analyze over-fit. These are the foundation for Ridge and Lasso Regression, used heavily in Sports prediction. Sentiment measurement and Social Media data mining can be input also. PA works best when the data is accurate and properly sampled. There are also fee-based data sources. We analyze accuracy of various models and explore prediction algorithms improvement.

Bio: Ash Pahwa, Ph.D., is an educator, author, entrepreneur, and visionary with three decades of experience. He earned his doctorate in Comp. Sci. from Illinois Institute of Technology. He is listed in Who’s Who in the Frontiers of Science and Technology. He is a Google Certified Analytics Consultant. Bio: Christine Ruther
Ms. Ruther works directly with a wide range of clients in compliance & safety engineering, and in quality & regulatory affairs. She works mainly with manufacturers, from start-ups through Fortune 500 companies. But, she has also worked for government agencies such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI), as well as standards and laboratory oversight agencies such as the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Her knowledge of global regulations from MDD/AIMDD and RED through FDA and FCC coupled with her engineering abilities in risk analysis and design controls makes her a valuable asset to device teams
Ms. Ruther has extensive experience in the medical device industry including experience with wireless devices. She has significant strengths in compliance and regulatory engineering. Ms. Ruther held the post of Director of Product Development and Regulatory Affairs for AirBed Corporation in Anaheim, California. There she assisted in design of the company’s products, coordinated regulatory compliance and performed product failure analysis. After working at AirBed, she joined TUV Product Service working from their San Diego, California, office. At TUV, Christine was the technical manager for the Medical Device Testing group in the US and directly managed the Medical testing and ISO/CE auditing activities for the southwestern region. As well as managing, Ms. Ruther specified and conducted compliance testing for medical devices and performed audits of medical device manufacturers. After four years at TUV, Christine became the Compliance Manager for Cardiac Science in Irvine, California. Her career advanced further when she joined the medical telemetry division of GE Medical Systems as a Lead Professional Systems Engineer.
Christine Ruther received her undergraduate and graduate education in Ohio. After completing a BS in Physics at Xavier University, she went on to earn a MS in Biomedical Engineering at The Ohio State University. She is a licensed professional electrical engineer in California.

Summary: Since 2009, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the electric power industry have jointly invested over $7.9 billion in 99 cost-shared Smart Grid Investment Grant (SGIG) projects. Ten electric utilities agreed to conduct consumer behavior studies (CBS) and produce comprehensive reports with the aim of evaluating customer responses to various types of time-based rate programs implemented in conjunction with information and control technologies.
Results summarizing the analyses of the CBS utilities will be presented over five different topical areas:
(1) Recruitment approaches: effects of opt-in and opt-out; (2) Pricing versus rebates: effects of CPP and CPR; (3) Customer information technologies: effects of IHDs; (4) Customer control technologies: effects of PCTs; (5) Customer response to prices: effects of TOU.
Bio: Peter Cappers, a Research Scientist and Deputy Group Leader in the Electricity Markets and Policy Group at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, has conducted research for the past 15 years into demand response and energy efficiency issues. At present, he is leading DOE’s technical assistance and evaluation efforts of eleven Smart Grid Investment Grant projects who agreed to undertake a dynamic pricing consumer behavior study with a controlled and randomized experimental design approach. Prior to joining LBNL, he worked for Neenan Associates where he helped to develop and implement techniques for quantifying customer price response to both dynamic retail rates and wholesale demand response programs, and their subsequent impact on wholesale market prices, price volatility, and service reliability. Mr. Cappers received a B.A. in 1997 from Syracuse University in Mathematics and Economics, and a M.S. in 2005 from Cornell University in Applied Economics.

Summary: This series of IEEE Communications Society webinars will highlight three areas of intense technical interest that require substantial development to make 5G a reality and realize its promises for the Internet of Things. (Part 2: Three Key Challenges for 5G; Part 3: 5G’s Signal-Processing Demands)

Emerging 5G designs will have to handle a wide range of frequencies, from today’s 3G bands up to the 70 GHz range and beyond. They will also need to deal with an equally wide range of approaches for making the most efficient use of existing and expanded bandwidth, from flexible short-range device-to-device communication, shifting frequencies to adapt to conditions, and strategies like beamforming and MIMO. So, among other challenges, designers will have to devise antennas that are compact enough to fit into handheld devices or compact base-stations, flexible enough to respond to a much wider variety of frequencies over short and long distances, and smart enough to accommodate both low-data-rate spatial multiplexing (MIMO) and antenna arrays that can shape signals to deliver high data rates to a single receiver in a crowd.
